GROWING HOMES
Housing Security for farmers
PILOT HOUSE MATCHING PORTAL

An interface that creates access to affordable rental housing for farmers and farmworkers (both on and off farm) in the Hudson Valley region. Home providers can list housing opportunities and farmers can submit housing searches to be matched by Growing Homes.

Why rent to a local farmer? Hudson Valley farmers are the ones behind the scenes who make this area so sought-after, supplying restaurants and farmers markets with fresh local food and stewarding scenic landscapes. Unfortunately, with all of the demand to experience this lifestyle from visitors and newcomers, the very people who make it so special are no longer able to afford to live here. Growing Homes is appealing to community-minded homeowner to prioritize renting to their local farmer and in doing so support the viability of agriculture in the region.

Note: Growing Homes is not directly associated with and does not endorse any of these listings, we just provide a platform for folks to find each other. This pilot program is iterative. We will be adjusting it based on feedback over time to make it as useful and relevant as possible, so please feel free to reach out with suggestions!

How does it work?

Home providers and home seekers create profiles below. Only housing offerings are listed on the website, not farmer bios. Growing Homes' role is to propose matches. Growing Homes does not provide any facilitation or mediation service for the matches made in the portal. (Home providers do not need to provide land for farming, but in the form, land available for cultivation can be listed).

If you would like facilitation and live in Ulster County, you can check out HomeShare below. HomeShare listings are also in included in the portal with contact info for home seekers to reach out directly. If you would like help with the matching process ("facilitation") and live or wish to live in Ulster County, you can check out HomeShare Ulster County's services and listings below.

Note: Home owners listings will have all of the information entered into the form displayed publicly except name, contact info, address and suggestions, unless the home provider opts for only sharing the listing with program administrators. Home seeker information will only be viewed by program administrators and by the home provider that Growing Homes proposes a match with.

For Home Providers
Create a housing listing. If we receive an inquiry about your listing, or we think you would match with someone, we will email you and the farmer with each other's profiles for you to determine if it is a good fit.
Notice: If a farmer is using the portal to secure housing for their employees, the housing falls under NYS employer provided housing rules and will have to meet standards and possibly be inspected depending on the type of worker.

For Farmers/Farmworkers Seeking Housing
Create a profile. If you find a listing you are interested in, email julesfarr@growinghomes.org, and we will email you and the home provider with each others profiles for you to determine if it is a good fit. We will also connect you with home providers if they think you might be a good match.

Guidelines for Housing Listings
-
Home providers should be committed to providing a safe space for LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC farmers.
-
Affordability is relative, but the Farmer Housing Working Group survey showed that farmers consider $850-$1450 a month to be affordable. Anecdotally we have found that some farmers/farmworkers can only afford $500 a month.

Homeshare Ulster County

We are partnering with HomeShare Ulster County to provide affordable rentals for farmers. HomeShare Ulster County (HSUC) is a home sharing program that matches a Home Provider (with extra room in their home or a studio or cottage on their property) with a Home Seeker looking for an affordable rental. The arrangement may include a task exchange such as providing transportation, pet care, or light house or yard work. This ongoing help exchange is NOT home care for elders or infants. Home sharing is NOT for immediate or emergency housing needs, short term stays or to take the place of need in home health aides or childcare.
HomeShare takes applications from Home Providers and Home Seekers and follows up with a thorough interview conducted by trained HomeShare Ulster County staff. Applicants are carefully vetted and this includes background, credit and reference checks. Matches are based on preferences, common needs, interests and lifestyle. The process also includes a two-week trial period to ensure that the match is agreeable to both parties, and if not, the applicants remain in our program for future matches. There is no fee for this service and HomeShare Ulster County staff remain in contact with the Home Provider and Home Seeker throughout the process and the life of a match.
